In order to answer this question, you have to look outside of North America. Let's take Asia for example, there are cosmo magazines there, movies glamorize thin girls, and the women there actually worry about gaining weight a lot more than the women in North America. Do they display anorexic symptoms, no. Anorexia is more of a North America/European problem. It is really a self-image issue rather than a food issue. Often, you will find that anorexic girls have more issues than just food, and if it's not food, it will be something else. No - people are responsible for their own damn self.

While I don't think the media is <i>responsible</i> per se, I do think they should focus more on socially responsible role models and those that build our society, rather than Hollywood stick figures that do nothing more than entertain. Not to downplay Hollywood - after all, they're just doing their jobs and living their lives - but it is up to us as a society to place more importance on philanthropists and social entrepreneurs. Great issue.
